Demand construction of hostels instead of cultural centre

KARIMNAGAR: Activists belonging to the Students Federation of India (SFI) Karimnagar district unit have staged a dharna in front of the SRR government degree and PG college in Karimnagar town on Wednesday opposing the construction of Kala Bharathi, a cultural centre on the premises.

Instead, the student leaders demanded that the government should  construct the hostels for the benefit of students studying in the prestigious and ancient educational institution of north Telangana region.

On this occasion, SFI district secretary Shanigarapu Rajnikanth flayed the government for converting the SRR college premises into a cultural centre by constructing Kala Bharathi in two acres of land. Instead of constructing a cultural centre on the premises of the SRR college, the government should take up construction of hostel buildings as more than 15 government hostels were housed in private rented buildings without adequate facilities in the town, he stated.

He alleged that already the government had occupied the spacious Arts college and Circus grounds in the heart of Karimnagar town in the name of beautification of the town with gardens as part of Smart city project. The conversion of college grounds had denied sports activities to the sportspersons in the town, he alleged.

Appealing the government to rethink about its decision to construct Kala Bharathi on the SRR college premises, he threatened to launch agitational programmes with the support of all organisations and alumni of the college. SFI activists Pelli Aravind, Panhala Avinash Goud, Tipparam Rohith, Purushotham, Naveen, Sandhya and others were also present.
