KARIMNAGAR: Sujatha Surepally, associate professor and head, department of sociology of Satavahana University has bagged a prestigious literary award from Telugu University, which would be presented in the month of January 2022.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 5,116 and a citation and memento. Sujatha had been teaching Sociology for the last 21 years. She has written several articles and published books on caste, gender, SEZz, anti-Polavaram dam movement and actively participated in the statehood movement. She had done had PhD from Osmania university on Dalit women’s empowerment.
She writes articles for Telugu newspapers and edits a quarters magazine namely Desi Disha. She was in the forefront in the Polepally SEZ struggle, environmental protection against granites quarries in Karimnagar district.
She attended training with UNCHR Geneva, New York, Bangkok on minority rights and Human Rights training with Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. She was also chosen by US Embassy for Women University Administrator training at Nebraska University, USA.
She bagged NRI Global impact award and also Human Award 2020 by Pure American based NGO for her services during the pandemic with migrant workers and also helping poor students with laptops, mobiles to attend online classes. She relentlessly works for poor students to get educational support through various organisations from pandemic to till date.
She is a founder member of the Telangana Women’s JAC, served as secretary of the Telangana Writers Forum. Founder member Dalit Women Collective. Convenor, Telangana Bhumi Rakshana Sangam. Her mission is to work for the empowerment of Dalits and other marginalised communities.
