BJP leader petitions with CBI to probe
KARIMNAGAR: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has also instructed the Telangana state government Chief Secretary to take appropriate action against the allegations made by a petitioner that illegal mining operations and irregularities in the export of granite from the Karimnagar district.
Accordingly, the Enforcement Directorate had recently served notices to nine granite companies including one granite quarry owned by Minister for BC Welfare and Civil Supplies Gangula Kamalakar’s brother in various parts of Karimnagar district.
BJP senior leader and advocate Bethi Mahender Reddy said that he had written to the PMO on March 27, 2021, giving complete details about how the granite companies were evading royalty taxes. He said that he had urged the PMO to take action against the granite quarries including the one owned by the family members of the Minister for Civil Supplies for evading tax to the tune of Rs 124.94 crore.
He said that he had urged the PMO to recover the tax amount of Rs 124.94 crore by imposing five-time fine and collect a total of Rs 749.66 crore from all the nine granite companies. Following his complaint, the PMO directed the Telangana government on April 7, 2021, to conduct an inquiry and submit a report to their office and keep the information in the portal.
He had stated that he had lodged a complaint with ED and Central Bureau of India (CBI) in New Delhi on July 8 and 10, 2021 respectively demanding action against the illegal granite quarry operations and export of granite by evading taxes. Mr Mahender Reddy demanded that the state government should take stern action against the 9 granite companies including one company owned by the relatives of the Minister.
Refuting the claims made by Minister for Civil Supplies that he was ‘big brother’ for the granite industry in Karimnagar, he said that the ‘true lies’ of the Minister would be exposed very soon. He said that the CBI would also enter into the picture and probe into the evasion of taxes.
