KARIMNAGAR: In a surprising development, the Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK) had unanimously passed a record agenda of 555 issues without any discussion or debate at the municipal general body meeting in Karimnagar town on Wednesday.
The meeting was organised under the chairmanship of Mayor Y Sunil Rao after a long gap and included several issues numbering a total of 555 issues. Even the agenda copy book was so heavy that the corporators were unable to hold them in their hands and placed them on the desks. Ironically, not a single issue of the 555 agenda was discussed and the meeting had declared that the issues included in the agenda books were passed unanimously amid protests by the opposition BJP corporators.
Against the start of the meeting at 11 am, the general body meeting started at 12.15. Irked over this, the BJP corporators squatted in front of the podium and protested against the adamant attitude of the TRS. The BJP leaders also alleged that the BJP divisions were neglected by the ruling party in the allocation of funds.
Later, Minister for Civil Supplies and BC welfare Gangula Kamalakar had arrived at the venue and occupied the stage as an ex-officio member. He assured of all-round development of all the 60 municipal divisions and allocation of funds without any discrimination.
Only saving grace of the meeting was that the MCK had decided to increase the expenditure for the conduct of last rites (funeral) as part of the Anthima yatra (last journey) scheme from the existing Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. Former Mayor S Ravinder Singh had launched the scheme of conducting last rites of the departed person at a cost of Re 1 only during his regime and won accolades.
Another issue that can be highlighted in the meeting was the resolution passed by the MCK against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for insulting the Telangana martyrs with his statements on the formation of a separate Telangana state amid protests by the BJP corporators. Even though the BJP corporators were protesting against the resolution, the ruling party leaders have declared themselves as the resolution was passed against the Prime Minister for hurting the sentiments of the Telangana people.
The opposition BJP corporators have protested against the ruling party leaders for not even discussing a single issue of the agenda and declaring them as passed unanimously. They also found fault with the TRS for insulting the national anthem for singing abruptly in the meeting without conduct of the general body meeting.
