Kaleshwaram irrigation project is an engineering marvel, says Collector RV Karnan

KLIP transformed the Telangana state on irrigation front and emerged as rice bowl of the country

KARIMNAGAR, JUNE 7, 2023: Collector RV Karnan has said that the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) was an engineering marvel and first of its kind in the entire country.

The state-of-the-art underground pump house of the Kaleshwaram project at Laxmipur in Ramadugu mandal of Karimnagar district, now named as Gayatri pump house, with gigantic motors of 139 MW capacity each, would be pumping 2 TMC feet of water a day. It is conssidered as the heart of Kaleshwaram project, Godavari water reaching the pump house at Laxmipur through Medigadda, Annaram, Sundilla and Yellampally barrages and Nandi Medaram pump house would be lifted for a height of 117 meters before delivering it into the 5.76 km gravity canal before joining the flood flow canal (FFC) of Sriramsagar project. From FFC, it would reach Mid Manair reservoir to complete the Link-II of the project.

The Collector visited the Gayatri pump house on Wednesday as part of Irrigation water day as part of the Telangana decennial celebrations. On this occasion, he interacted with the engineering students, who were already present there to inspect the underground lift pump house and the world’s biggest lift irrigation project.

Interacting with a private engineering college students, the Collector said that the KLIP was the largest lift irrigation project in the world with three barrages, 1531 kilometers gravity canals, 203 kms of tunnels, 20 lifts, 19 pump houses and 20 reservoirs with a  total capacity of 147 tmcs irrigating 37 lakh acres. He said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao with a  vision and made agriculture most viable  in the Telangana state by completing the KLIP in a record and providing irrigation sources of the upland regions of the state.

He said that the KLIP had increased the area of cultivation and emerged as the rice bowl of the country by emerging as the largest padd producer. He also said that the KLIP had recharge the ground water table in entire Telangana state. Trainee collector Lenin Vatsal Toppo, Tahsildar Rajkumar and others were also present.
