Dr Sumita Shankar promoted as professor at GGH Guntur

GUNTUR: Renowned Plastic Surgeon Dr Sumita Shankar took charge as the Professor of Plastic Surgery department at Government General Hospital (GGH), Guntur, on August 25.

Dr Sumita was working in charge of HoD in the capacity of Associate Professor from June 1 after the retirement of the previous Professor. Since Dr Shankar, M.Ch (Plastic Surgery), Carl Zeiss Fellow in Hand and Microsurgery, FICS (Fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery (Barcelona & USA), took over as the head of the department, the department has seen a whopping number of 400 fresh out-patient cases.

Dr Shankar has been instrumental in developing the department to an excellent standard including procuring essential instruments like state-of-the-art trauma kits for performing Maxillofacial trauma surgeries, and kits for performing rhinoplasty and microvascular surgery.  The department has also been doing cosmetic Surgeries such as Fat grafting, Hair transplantation, Breast reduction, Breast enlargement and breast enlargement in males (Gynaecomastia).

She has also introduced negative pressure wound therapy ( NPWT) which is one of the latest and best modalities for treating wounds in an indigenous technique that effectively reduces the treatment cost thereby making such international treatment options accessible to government hospital patients.

The department sees a lot of patients who accidentally cut their fingers, hands or legs while operating machinery. Such patients often need immediate surgery and failing to do so results in loss of function or sometimes loss of limb.

Apart from performing several such emergency procedures like tendon repair, microvascular repair of vessels, flap covers, reconstruction of post-cancer defects etc also.

The Plastic Surgery team comprises Dr Sumita Shankar, Professor and Head of the Department and three assistant professors Dr Ganga Bhavani, Dr Najma, Dr Chandralekha and Dr Kruthi who is a Maxillofacial surgeon. Recently the department was sanctioned three M Ch postgraduate seats.

Dr Shankar has also received several awards including the collector’s appreciation award. She has also consecutively been appreciated for her work and contribution by the college Principal during Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.

Dr Sumita has got selected for a prestigious surgical leadership program at the reputed Harvard Medical School (HMS – SLP 2023) in the USA. The superintendent of the government general hospital has appreciated and congratulated Dr Shankar who shall visit Harvard next month.

To add to her glory her work on Vascular malformation has also been selected for poster presentation in the coveted international plastic surgery meet, PSTM 2022 which will be presented on 30th October in Boston.
