Dr Sumita Shankar, HoD of Plastic Surgery, GGH, Guntur, get appreciations for her relentless service

GUNTUR:  Dr Sumita Shankar, Professor and Head of Department, Plastic Surgery department, Government General Hospital (GGH), Guntur, has bagged the appreciation certificate for her relentless service to the patients and transformation of the department.

As part of the Republic Day celebrations, GGH Superintendent Dr N Prabhavathi has presented the appreciation letter to Dr Sumita Shankar and congratulated. She said that Dr Sumita Shankar is the First Women Plastic Surgeon HOD for GGH, though the department was started in 1990, Dr Sumita,  since joining from May 2021 has changed the face of the department and brought the transformation at par with the norms of NMC and got the first batch of three Post graduates for M.Ch. in Plastic Surgery, the highest number in the entire state of Andhra Pradesh.

Earlier, the department was only known for treating birth deformities such as Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate, Post Burns deformity corrective surgeries and skin grafting only. Ever since, Dr Sumita Shankar has begun working in the department of Plastic Surgery, a variety of cases are being done that includes Facio maxillary trauma, Hand Surgery, Treatment of Filariasis, Breast surgeries, Micro vascular surgery, and Cosmetic Surgeries too.

Dr Sumita Shankar said that she was very happy that her contribution is appreciated and her humble self declared that these are all necessary for training the budding Plastic Surgeons. Her dream is that her Postgraduate should be able to share the international platforms too.

Dr Sumita Shankar is undergoing a surgical leadership course at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. She is going to graduate in March this year. She feels that this course has also played a big role in motivating her to work towards the upliftment of the department.
