A lady doctor’s novel gesture to save girl child

DMHO Dr Juveria and others all praise for novel scheme
KARIMNAGAR: In order to bring an attitudinal change in the mindset of the society and to end discrimination against the girl child, a senior gynaecologist from Karimnagar town has launched the novel programme of distributing Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana scheme policies for the girl children born in her Sanjeevanee nursing home.
Though a lot has been written and said about the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana as part of the ‘beti bachao – beti padhao’ programme, the scheme had not received much attention from the masses. Hence, Dr M Vijaya Lakshmi of the Sanjeevanee Nursing home in Karimnagar town had decided to distribute the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) policies to the girl children born in her hospital on her own by paying initial amount.
Accordingly, Dr Vijaya Lakshmi, who is also president of IMA women doctors’ wing, secured SSY policies in the name of girl children born in her hospital from State bank of India (SBI) by paying Rs 3,000 as initial amount for each child. She had provided SSY policies to 14 girl children by paying a total of Rs 42,000 at the rate of Rs 3,000 each policy.
At a special programme organised on the occasion of National Girl Child day at her hospital in Karimnagar on Monday, DM&HO Dr Juveria along IMA Telangana state president-elect Dr BN Rao, IMA district president Dr Laxman Kumar, secretary Dr Katari Arun, local corporator Sarilla Prasad, Food commission member Bharathi, Sanjeevanee hospital chairman Dr Naveen Kumar along with Dr Vijaya Lakshmi handed over the policies to the girl children to their parents.
Speaking on the occasion, DMHO Dr Juveria appreciated Dr Vijaya Lakshmi for launching the novel scheme of distributing the SSY policies to the girl children and instilling confidence among the parents. She also reminded that the state government was also providing KCR kit of Rs 13,000 for the girl children born in government hospitals.
IMA Telangana president-elect Dr BN Rao lauding the programme for the protection of girl children had informed Dr Vijaya Lakshmi to launch a massive public awareness programme about the importance of SSY scheme which was meant for the girl child education. He said that they would discuss in IMA to take up the programme throughout the state for the protection of girl child.
IMA district president Dr Laxman Kumar suggested the implementation of the scheme throughout the state by the IMA. Dr Vijaya Lakshmi said that they had launched this programme to help the girl children grow happily and it was not a burden on the parents for her education or marriage with SSY policy. She said that they would distribute the SSY to all the girl children born in their hospital and encourage the parents the habit of saving for the betterment of girl children.
